One hundred and seven undergraduate and graduate students were honored at the Spring 2008 Convocation ceremony for the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH) on May 17, 2008, the largest graduating class of the College to date in its eight-year history. Degrees awarded by type were:
- 5 Doctorate (PhD) degrees
- 45 Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees
- 4 Master of Science (MS) degrees
- 53 Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) degrees
The Convocation Ceremony was held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Temple of Music and Art in Tucson, which was filled to capacity with family and friends of graduates. A reception for graduates and their guests followed the ceremony in the Temple's courtyard. Built in 1927, the Temple of Music and Art is a beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival-style cultural center in the "Old Pueblo."
Interim Dean and Professor Iman Hakim gave the welcoming remarks, then introduced Bob England, MD, MPH, who gave the convocation address. "Dr. Bob," as he is known to coworkers, is the Director of the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, the third-largest local health jurisdiction in the country. Shown above giving his speech, "Dr. Bob" has been a public health doctor for his entire career, with most of it in Arizona. He is a University of Arizona alumnus, earning both his undergraduate and his medical degrees here. His Master's in Public Health (MPH) is from UCLA, and his Preventive Medicine Residency was completed with UCLA and the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.

MEZCOPH graduates listen to "Dr. Bob's" convocation address.
Along the way, Dr. England has held several positions in state and local public health, beginning in Pima County. He was the State Epidemiologist for Arizona twice, and has run both a very small and very large local health department. Dr. England has been involved in numerous outbreaks, epidemics, and the national, state, and local response to many public health issues.
Numerous student awards were given out during the ceremony, including recognition for academic excellence, outstanding seniors, and other areas of achievement.
The faculty and staff of MEZCOPH extend our congratulations to this excellent group of graduating students!
