April 9, 2009:  The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH) is celebrating National Public Health Week through April 13.

Inspiring stories about public health pioneers, recaps of recent public health events at the college and more are available on its Web site:

http://www.publichealth.arizona.edu/news/public-health-week/

The site, which will be updated daily, also features a proclamation by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer naming this week Public Health Week in Arizona; links to the Web site for the National Public Health Week; and a recap and photo album of an April 3 social justice symposium. Further, new public service announcements focusing on “Clean Hands” and “Diet and Exercise” were released online. These short videos, designed to run as Television PSAs, feature Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, and promote good public health practices. Dr. Carmona is a distinguished professor at the college and is the president of the Canyon Ranch Institute. A digital story about Dr. Carmona’s career was posted Tuesday.

Digital stories – short videos that showcase the careers of Arizona public health pioneers – will be released to the public online for the first time during the week. Created by MEZCOPH students, these were shown at the annual Arizona Public Health Association annual meeting in September 2008 and provide a delightful way to learn about the history of public health in our state. A photo album and summary of the second James Dalen Lecture on Public Health Policy (held April 3) also will be posted, with information on speaker William Foege, MD, MPH, an epidemiologist who worked in the successful campaign to eradicate small pox in the 1970s.

Please check back daily! And celebrate public health week all month long.
