Health Promotion Sciences

Future Public Health Professionals

Health Promotion Sciences engages the community to translate science into practice to inspire and change the world. The mission of the Division of Health Promotion Sciences in the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health is to collaborate with communities in southwestern United States in developing innovative responses to health challenges, and translating best practices globally.

The Health Promotion Sciences division (HPS) is sub-divided into sections that are aligned with academic areas. HPS consist of the Family and Child Health section and the Health Behavior and Health Promotion section. The division supports the instruction, research and service mission of the College by providing excellent classroom, research and community training opportunities to students.

Research

Faculty research ranges from laboratory science to research in health promotion and prevention; both directly benefit the public. Current areas of research include:


  • Nutrition, prevention and physical activity

  • Tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse

  • Women's health, children's health, elder health

  • Violence against women

  • Minority health, global health

  • Cancer prevention, HIV/AIDS and other diseases

  • Health education and prevention science

  • Program evaluation, quality of care improvement

  • Patient empowerment, chronic disease self-management, and quality of life assessment.

Community Outreach

Faculty and students have provided public health services to the community via health education lectures, public health fairs, border health services, community outreach programs, and public health surveillance. Check out our Student Organizations
