For the University of Arizona graduate who has worked with public health issues for most of his career, the position was a perfect fit for Arizona Smokers Helpline (ASHLine) director, Stephen Michael, MS. It is a great combination to be able to work in behavioral health and academia, Michael said, I like the idea of the helpline. It provides an arena thats not available to people who have other addictions. ASHLine deals with the largest public health issue when it comes to health care.
ASHLine helps Arizona residents who want to quit smoking with services that include telephone counseling on an individual basis, web-based services, and printed materials. Since its inception in 1995, ASHLine has received more than 10,000 calls each year.
Michael has previously worked with the Bureau of Tobacco and Chronic Disease (BTCD), which is a part of the Arizona Department of Health Services. He also has worked as a health care consultant to hospitals, health care centers and medical practices all over the country, in addition to working with teens and youth in mentoring and anti-drug programs.
Michael is a licensed substance abuse counselor who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies/Child Development, with a minor in Psychology and Interpreting for the Deaf, and a Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, with focuses on Deafness and Substance Abuse, both from the UA.
