Car Cookout has Important Public Health Message:
'Your Car, Literally, is an Oven'
Several staff, students, and faculty members at The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health participated in a "car cookout" as part of a light-hearted way to deliver an important public health message.
The group cooked several food items in their cars to illustrate just how hot a parked vehicle can get during the summer months. More...
Public Health Students Receive the 2006-2007 Peter W. Likins Inclusive Excellence Award
The Public Health Student Alliance (PHSA), representing all students at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health, was selected as the student organization recipient of the 2006-2007 Peter W. Likins Inclusive Excellence Award.
According to a memo from the UA President's Office and the UA Diversity Resource Office, "the recipients are a distinguished group of individuals who have made significant contributions toward enhancing the University of Arizona’s academic excellence by helping to create a diverse and inclusive campus community."
Through their community service and social justice efforts, the following student groups at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health demonstrated dedication to increasing cultural knowledge and awareness by organizing at least three events this year. More...
Dr. Carmona Speaks Out About Political Interference and Public Health
Richard H. Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, 17th U.S. Surgeon General
and distinguished professor of public health at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health, recently garnered national headlines when he and two fellow surgeon generals testified before the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform,
the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Dr. Carmona gave testimony, along with C. Everett Koop, MD, ScD and David Satcher, MD, PhD, about how political agendas, ideology and theology have interfered with the efficient workings of the Office of the Surgeon General, marginalizing the efforts of the Office and the United States Public Health Service. RHO Gets $100K Award from W.K. Kellogg Foundation to Address Rural Issues
The Rural Health Office at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health was recently selected to participate in a network that brings together groups from different sectors to better address issues faced by communities in the rural Southwest. Funded by a five-year, $100,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Office will join nine other organizations in Arizona and New Mexico to participate in the “Rural People, Rural Policy” initiative.
“This initiative energizes and equips rural organizations and networks to shape policy that will improve the vitality of rural communities and the lives of the residents,” notes Joyce A. Hospodar, senior program coordinator at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health and principal investigator on the grant. “The goal of the effort is to give voice to these rural issues on a national level and to develop the knowledge, capacity, strategic direction, and action of a critical mass of organizations that seek to improve policy that affects people and places in rural America.” More...
Four EOH Students Help Fit Respirators
Four environmental and occupational health MPH students recently helped fit new UMC medical residents with N95 respirators. Jennifer Currie, Erin Blomquist, David Campos, and Nick Smith volunteered their time to help fit about 125 new medical residents with the respirators that—when fitted and worn correctly— protect them from airborne diseases, such as tuberculosis and SARS. FCH Students Visit Northern Arizona
As part of a 2007 summer pre-session course, seven graduate public health students in family and child health learned about the design, successes and challenges of rural public health programs by visiting the Navajo, Hopi and Hualapai Tribal Nations in northern Arizona. More...

Three undergraduate students in pre-health had an opportunity to meet U.S. President George W. Bush as part of a visit with the UA Softball team. Binational Collaboration Explored
Several representatives from U.S. and Mexico border agencies met recently at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health to explore a collaboration that would make more accessible information about border issues.
The topic of the day-long meeting was "Brainstorming and Planning Session for the U.S.-Mexico Border Research Policy Institute." The working group included representation from the Pan American Health Organization, El Paso Field Office, ASU, MEZCOPH, ADHS Border Health Office, El Colegio de Sonora, CIAD, and the Universidad de Sonora. Former Smokers Sought for a Study on Green Tea
The UA Zuckerman College of Public Health and the Arizona Cancer Center are seeking former smokers for a study on the promising role of green tea in the prevention of lung cancer.
The primary aim of this study is to assess whether the regular consumption of green tea is associated with decreased damage to fat, protein or genetic material, also known as “oxidative stress.” This type of damage is thought to contribute to the development of cancer. More...

Dr. Watson Named Acting Director
Ronald Watson, PhD, professor at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health, has been named Acting Director of the Division of Health Promotion Sciences. Dr. Watson is stepping in for Iman Hakim,
MD, PhD, MPH, who is serving as Interim Dean for the College. Dr. Watson's areas of research include
using alternative medicines/dietary supplements to treat heart disease, asthma, allergy and osteoarthritis.
Attakai and AzCPHP Receive IHS Tucson Area Merit Award
Agnes Attakai, MPA, director of health disparities outreach and prevention, and the Arizona Center for Public Health Preparedness at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health recently were the recipients of the Tucson Area Indian Health Service Director's Merit Award.
The award, which is at the discretion of the Tucson Area IHS Director, was given to them for their "unwavering
commitment and support" of the
U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, Tucson Area
Indian Health Service, and for
assisting in carrying out their
mission to elevate the health
status of American Indians."
