Drawing on decades of leadership in public health, clinical medicine, emergency preparedness, and health diplomacy, Dr. Carmona will explore the threats that divide nations—and the opportunities to unite them—in advancing global health, peace, and prosperity. The lecture will highlight the essential role of prevention, preparedness, and policy in strengthening health systems and safeguarding communities worldwide.

Richard Carmona, MD, MPH ’98, is the 17th Surgeon General of the United States and a Laureate Professor at the University of Arizona. A national leader in public health, medicine, and preparedness, he has dedicated his career to prevention, health equity, and strengthening health systems. Dr. Carmona previously served in senior academic, clinical, and public service roles, including leading Arizona’s first regional trauma care system. As Surgeon General, he advanced landmark initiatives in prevention, preparedness, health literacy, and global health.
