“MEZCOPH is such a supportive environment. Both the staff and the students are willing to listen to and collaborate on projects. So many opportunities will arise while you are here. Take advantage of them, you’ll learn you are able to do things that you never knew you were capable of here.”

  • Hometown:

    Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

    Prior Degree(s):

    Foods, Nutrition, and Dietetics from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee

    Before entering the program:

    I served in the US Peace Corps; where I worked as a Community Health Extension Agent in the rural village located in Zambia, Africa.

    Why did you choose public health?

    I have always been interested in the health field, but it took a long time for me to settle on a career path. I started to learn about public health while I was in the Peace Corps, when I started noticing the extent that such a diverse range of factors (sanitation, infrastructure, finances, etc.) had on health. Public Health that takes all of these factors into consideration when implementing a change. I think that is why public health has had such a big impact on our world.

    Why did you choose MEZCOPH?

    I chose MEZCOPH not only because of the well-respected faculty and the great campus, but also because of the wonderful and supportive staff. During my application process I always received the fastest and most helpful responses out of any school I applied to. It didn’t matter whether I asked school specific questions to general application questions, I never failed to get a response. I knew that this is the kind of support that I wanted from a school.

    Public health interests:

    I am interested in bettering health outcomes of the under-five population in rural and underserved areas, focusing on the socio-economic factors that create malnutrition.

    Internship:

    Community outreach and administrative management at a small non-profit

    Interests/hobbies outside of school:

    I like making my own natural household cleaners and skincare products. I also like getting outdoors, hiking, yoga, dance, fitness, and of course my cat and my chickens!

    Tip for future students:

    It may be cliché, but it’s so important…don’t be afraid to ask questions or try something new. You’ll grow so much if you do.
