The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health and University Information Technology Services (UITS) produced an app to teach children how to prevent type 2 diabetes. Don’t Monkey Around with Diabetes is free and available in both Spanish and English in the iTunes store.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that type 2 diabetes has increased in the last 20 years among children and adolescents in the U.S. The highest incidence of type 2 diabetes in youth between the ages of 10-19 is among American Indians, African Americans and Hispanics.

To address this problem, the Zuckerman College of Public Health and UITS, produced the app to teach children how to prevent type 2 diabetes. Through interactive games and a storybook, the free app teaches kids ages 5 to 10 about making healthy choices and living a healthy lifestyle.

The storybook characters include Lady Low and Sweet, the Evil Diana Betes and the hero of the day, Sir Insulin Monk, who saves the Town of Glucose from the unhealthy choices and unhealthy lifestyle promoted by the Evil Diana Betes.

Don’t Monkey Around with Diabetes is free and downloadable from the iTunes App store.
