Standing the Watch for Global Health Security

For the annual Dalen Lecture presented by the Zuckerman College of Public Health, Dr. Richard Carmona, will give a presentation titled Standing the Watch for Global Health Security about the threats that divide nations—and the opportunities to unite them—in advancing global health, peace, and prosperity.

Carmona, MD, MPH ’98, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States and a Laureate Professor at the University of Arizona, brings wide experience as a national and global leader in public health. His lecture will highlight the essential role of prevention, preparedness, and policy in strengthening health systems and safeguarding communities worldwide.

About Dr. Richard Carmona 
Richard Carmona, MD, MPH ’98, is the 17th Surgeon General of the United States and a Laureate Professor at the University of Arizona. A national leader in public health, medicine, and preparedness, he has dedicated his career to prevention, health equity, and strengthening health systems. Dr. Carmona previously served in senior academic, clinical, and public service roles, including leading Arizona’s first regional trauma care system. As Surgeon General, he advanced landmark initiatives in prevention, preparedness, health literacy, and global health.

About the Dalen Lecture
Dr. James E. Dalen, MD, MPH, ScD (hon), Master FCCP, was a renowned cardiologist, visionary leader, and dedicated advocate for public health. He retired from the University of Arizona in 2001 after serving as Dean of the College of Medicine for thirteen years and as Vice President for Health Sciences for seven years. During his tenure, he was instrumental in establishing the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, and the Arizona Telemedicine Program.

In 2008, Dr. Dalen and his wife, Priscilla, established the James E. Dalen Distinguished Lecture for Health Policy to raise awareness of critical public health issues. His legacy continues through the lecture series and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable career.
