Historian on Race Discrimination in Healthcare and Medical Education to Headline Social Justice Symposium, March 23

For more than 30 years, the research of P. Preston Reynolds, MD, PhD, has focused on the history of race discrimination in healthcare and medical education. She is a Professor of Medicine in the General Medicine, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care Division and a faculty member for Biomedical Ethics and Humanities at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

Dr. Reynolds has published and lectured on the subject of race discrimination in medicine and received major funding from the National Institutes of Health and national foundations, and won awards for her scholarship. Dr. Reynolds has held numerous national leadership positions including serving for 15 years as a member of the board of directors of Physicians for Human Rights.

Dr. Reynolds will be the keynote speaker at the The 2012 Social Justice Symposium on Friday, March 23rd. She is speaking at 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. in Du Val Auditorium in the University of Arizona Medical Center (1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, 85724). The event is free and open to the public.

The 2012 Social Justice Symposium is a day-long event (8:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.) to engage students, faculty, health professionals, and the Tucson community in dialogue to cultivate awareness and foster social change. The symposium is run entirely by students at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. The theme of this year’s symposium is Mind the Gap: healthcare Disparities Across the Globe.

Parking is available in the UA Medical Center parking garage (1501 N. Campbell Ave.) or the Highland Avenue Parking Garage (on East Helen St. between Highland Ave. and Vine Ave.). Metered parking is available in the lot to the East of Drachman Hall. The rate is .25 cents per 10 minutes.
