Dear Friends of the College,
The Fall 2023 semester is underway, and we have had a good start to the academic year! In the middle of this month, Hispanic Heritage Month begins (September 15 to October 15). I want to thank all our staff and faculty who continue to support our Latinx students and Hispanic communities in Arizona. We are ranked in the top 5 nationally among schools and colleges of public health for the percentage of Hispanic/Latino students in our programs!
I was pleased to join many students, staff, and faculty at the Student Mixer last week, organized by our Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in collaboration with our Office of Student Affairs, to build connections for our community. I encourage you to check out the photos in our recap gallery – it was a great way to bring our college family together! Thanks to all our faculty and staff who volunteered to serve the food and help with the event.

At the start of October, we are excited for the return of our annual Social Justice Symposium, organized by students, to advance social justice issues. The theme for this year’s symposium will be Mental Health: Bringing the Community and Its Resources Together and and it will take place virtually on Friday, October 6. Watch for more information coming soon.
Finally, I invite everyone to join our 2023 Homecoming Celebration and alumni awards ceremony on Wednesday, November 1. We’re excited to come together, connect in person with our alumni, college community, and supporters, and celebrate all that we have achieved together. I hope to see you there, register today!
Faculty, Staff, and Students: Honors, Profiles, and Awards
We are very proud of all that our students, staff, and faculty accomplish and appreciate the recognition that comes their way.
Congratulations again to Dr. Karl Krupp who received a Fulbright award for a comparison study of policy for aging populations in Sweden and India. You can learn more in this story about his award and research in Health Sciences Connect.
I want to thank Dr. Jennifer Bea, Dr. Cynthia Thomson, and Dr. Robin Harris for all their work to renew the award from the National Cancer Institute to continue funding the STEP-UP program (Student Transformative Experiences to Progress Under-represented Professionals) that trains students to become cancer researchers in collaboration with the UArizona Cancer Center.
In our August Newsletter we mentioned the Arizona Farmworkers Enumeration Profile Study (AZ-FEPS), and I very much appreciate the work that Dr. Kate Ellingson and Priscila Ruedas, MPH, have done to advance AZ-FEPS! The study has now been announced in a news release from UArizona Health Sciences.
Gratitude for Our Community
I thank all of you for your ongoing support of the College and our public health mission. We live in troubling times, and so often public health offers solutions to the widespread suffering in this world.
As always, I look forward to working with you to support our diverse communities, both locally and globally, with the best public health education, service, and research.
Best Wishes for your Health and Safety,
