The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) has recognized the Center for Rural Health in the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona (the Arizona Center for Rural Health) as its Outstanding Rural Health Organization for 2013.

“The National Rural Health Association supports the Arizona Center for Rural Health in reaching out to the state's rural communities to ensure access of quality care as part of a comprehensive approach,” said Alan Morgan, NRHA CEO. “We are pleased to honor the center’s innovative work that can serve as inspiration for rural areas across the country.”

Neil MacKinnon, PhD, professor of public health and director of the Arizona Center for Rural Health said, "The Center partners with Arizona’s rural communities in a variety of ways to improve access to care, reduce costs of care and to enhance the quality and safety of care. It is both humbling and affirming to be recognized nationally for our efforts."

The Arizona Center for Rural Health will receive the award on May 9 at NRHA’s 36th Annual Rural Health Conference in Louisville, Ky. The conference is the largest gathering of rural health professionals in the nation. The 21,000-member NRHA is a nonprofit organization working to improve the health of rural Americans through advocacy, education and research and is the main voice for rural health in the nation.

The CRH at the University of Arizona has served the State of Arizona for more than 25 years.

“The mission of our Center is to improve the health and wellness of Arizona’s rural populations. This is a significant challenge, especially due to the diversity of rural Arizona – from old mining towns to the 22 tribal nations to retirement communities to the U.S.-Mexico border region. Fortunately, our state is blessed to have individuals who care deeply about health care in these rural communities.”
