Inside Public Health
MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 2022 |
|
Dear Friends of the College,
We have had a busy fall semester already. The college has hosted many successful engagement events, webinars, and meetings with our global partners. Here in Tucson, we have had more rain in September and October than we’ve seen in many years, and the rain is always welcome in the desert!
Even as we appreciate the extra rain here, our thoughts go out to those suffering from the impact of Hurricane Ian on the east coast, and to all the people struggling from the consequences of the war in Ukraine.
We are also grieving again for the victims of gun violence, in a tragic shooting incident on the University of Arizona campus in which a professor was killed, and for the children and others killed in the mass shooting in Thailand. We continue to push for a public health approach to mental health services and to the epidemic of gun violence, and we believe in a future when gun violence declines significantly thanks to data-driven public health programs and policies.
Hispanic Heritage Month
The beginning of October is still Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 to Oct 15), and we continue to thank and celebrate all the students, staff, and faculty in our college who do so much to support education, research, and public health services that benefit our Hispanic and Latinx communities!
In connection with Hispanic Heritage Month, I hope you will all read about our outstanding researcher Dr. Tomas Nuño and the vital work he has done in Hispanic and border communities. We are also very proud of Dr. David Garcia’s recent award from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities and the work he does through Nosotros Comprometidos a Su Salud.
Appreciation for Recent MEZCOPH Events
On September 9, we hosted our first Delta Omega Speaker Series event in Phoenix. Alumni, students, and staff from our Phoenix Campus attended for networking and discussion. The event featured two of our alumnae, Anna Carolina Ortiz, MPH ’17, and Zeida Dedolf Piecoro, MPH ’17, who engaged everyone in a compelling discussion about current challenges in child and maternal health. Check out the event photos and video of the presentation!
The next day, on Saturday, September 10, Dr. Zhao Chen and her team orchestrated the Feast for Your Brain community engagement event in the HSIB building on the Health Sciences campus. Designed to connect community members with the Precision Aging Network (PAN) and the MindCrowd aging brain research project, this event launched the PAN recruitment efforts and dozens of older adults signed up for the MindCrowd study. See some of the highlights in this
photo gallery from Health Sciences Connect!
Towards the end of last month we hosted two events on the same day! On Wednesday, September 28, Daniel Dawes, JD, a national leader in health equity and health policy, author of the book The Political Determinants of Health, visited UArizona Health Sciences. Dawes had a full day of meetings with leadership and students, and he gave a powerful presentation on the longterm fight for health equity to a capacity audience. I give special thanks to Martha Moore-Monroy whose friendship with Dawes made this remarkable visit possible, and to the Health Sciences Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for coordinating the full day of engagement activities.
On that same day, the second UArizona One Health Symposium took place in the HSIB building, with dozens of presentations by researchers from many different colleges and units around the university. Organized by Dr. Frank von Hippel, the highlight of the Symposium was the participation of Linda Birnbaum, PhD, DABT, ATS, a national leader in the use of One Health approaches in toxicology research, and the former director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Toxicology Program. If you missed the Symposium, you can see photos and find video recordings of the presentations on our recap page.
Faculty Fulbright Scholar Awards
Earning a Fulbright award for research abroad is no small achievement, and remarkably this year three of our faculty were given Fulbright awards! We very much appreciate that Health Sciences Connect highlighted each of them in an award story.
Global Engagement
We also have had an active summer and fall with our global partners! We signed an International Memorandum of Agreement with the University of Limerick in Ireland that was recently announced.
In August, we hosted a group of medical students from Universidad del Valle de Mexico (UVM), one of our newer partners, and they learned about many of our public health programs in Arizona.
Also in August, we were pleased to have a very productive visit from Dr. Jon Adams, a representative from the University of Technology Sydney in Australia. During his three-day visit, Dr. Adams met with many of our faculty to discuss opportunities for education and research collaboration between the two universities.
And in September, we launched our Global Health Speaker Series with a presentation by Priyanka Ravi about her research in India. Also we will host global engagement events during International education Week, November 14-18, 2022. Watch our calendar and social media for more information on our global events and series!
Community Town Hall
Due to the tragic shooting that killed a professor on the University of Arizona campus last week, we cancelled our Arizona Town Hall panel discussion event, Exploring Solutions: Homelessness, Substance Use, and Mental Health that would have been held on Friday, October 7. All of us in the UArizona community are grieving and processing this loss. We are looking for a time to reschedule the town hall later this fall.
Homecoming Celebration
I hope you will join with our MEZCOPH community including alumni, faculty, staff, students, and supporters at our annual Homecoming Celebration on October 27, 2022, 5 to 7pm! This year we’re excited to hold the event in the Sands Club Skybox at Arizona Stadium, with amazing views of downtown Tucson to the west, and the football stadium to the east.
During this event, we will honor the winners of our 2022 Alumni Awards and Community Leaders Awards and share news from the college. Join us to celebrate our award winners and community advocates for their outstanding service and leadership in the field of public health during this past year.

As we continue through the fall semester, I look forward to working with you to support our diverse communities, both locally and globally, with the best public health education, service, and research.
