The Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health is proud to announce Mary M. K. Foote MD '07, MPH '07 as the 2024 Alumna of the Year, recognizing her exceptional contributions to public health and emergency management. Currently serving as the Medical Director for the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response at the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, Dr. Foote has dedicated her career to improving health systems and ensuring equitable access to care during public health emergencies.

Every year, the U of A’s Alumni of the Year Award from the Zuckerman College of Public Health is given to a graduate who has bestowed honor on the college through significant contributions and accomplishments that embody the mission of the College. The award winner is recognized by the college and in a University-wide ceremony in February.

Since she joined the NYC Health Department in 2015, Dr. Foote has been at the forefront of outbreak response for Mpox, COVID-19, measles, Ebola, and Zika. Her innovative programs to fight disease have focused on equitable access to treatments and care, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, where she prioritized health communications and resource allocation to underserved communities.

Dr. Foote's journey began with a fascination for historical outbreaks, such as the Influenza Epidemic of 1918, which inspired her to pursue a dual degree in Medicine and Public Health from the University of Arizona. With nearly a decade of experience at the NYC Department of Health, she established the city’s Communicable Disease Preparedness Program to prepare healthcare services for emerging infectious diseases.

Her commitment to public health extends beyond New York City. Dr. Foote has worked on tuberculosis projects in India, Peru, and Nicaragua, and is recognized as a national expert in public health response to emerging infectious diseases. Dr. Foote's leadership and dedication to building resilient health systems exemplify the values of the Zuckerman College of Public Health.

As we celebrate Dr. Foote's achievements, we honor her unwavering commitment to improving public health and her significant impact on communities both locally and globally. Congratulations, Dr. Mary Foote, on this well-deserved recognition!
