As public health programs and healthcare providers find ways to take advantage of new technologies, Mohan Tanniru, PhD, adjunct professor in the Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona, and Chang Lu, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Blockchain Research Cluster at the University of British Colombia in Canada, collaborated to co-edit of a new book of articles by experts, titled Blockchain in Healthcare: Analysis, Design and Implementation, that provides a guide to the use of blockchain technology for healthcare purposes. The new book will advance understanding and implementation of blockchain technology to improve health outcomes.

Blockchain technology is an advanced database mechanism that allows transparent information sharing within an organization’s network. A blockchain database stores data in blocks that are linked together in a chain. Blockchain’s potential to improve healthcare and health research has been widely recognized.

The new book from Dr. Tanniru and Dr. Lu brings readers a holistic understanding of blockchain adoption in healthcare by considering the technical fundamentals of use cases alongside the regulatory, informational, and organizational challenges and solutions. The book also provides frameworks and toolkits to manage the entire life cycle of adoption, including analyzing the environment and feasibility, application design from a user-centered perspective, and implementation strategies that would overcome organizational and informational barriers.

Blockchain in Healthcare is published by Springer Link as part of its Future of Business and Finance book series. By reading this book, health informatics professionals and healthcare leaders will be better prepared to leverage the transformative potential of blockchain to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.
