Jaiden’s commitment to his two passions – public health and law and policy – and his ability to align those two fields, is truly inspiring and can be seen in his determination to support the health of communities by through the power of law and policy. He plans to continue his dedication to the field of public health law by attending law school after graduation.

Jaiden is grateful for his public health journey so far, and especially appreciates how the college helped him connect with the Tucson community beyond the classroom, and facilitated collaboration with organizations and people outside the university who have expanded his insight and abilities.

For this profile, we asked Jaiden about what he learned during his BS degree program at the Zuckerman College of Public Health, and what inspires him about public health work.

Q: Did you have a teacher or mentor who especially inspired you? How and why?

A: My junior year, I took Dr. Laura Gronewold’s Public Health Narratives course, which really opened my eyes to the breadth of public health as a field and how it has the power to impact every aspect of our lives. By introducing us to a variety of stories from diverse narrators in a variety of formats, and through her support as my honors thesis advisor, Dr. Gronewold has been immeasurably impactful on my public health education and career.

Q: What are some challenges or obstacles that you had to overcome in the process of your education in the college?

A:  One of the biggest challenges I had early on at U of A was deciding what field I wanted to study. It took a couple semesters of exploring different classes, talking to students and professors, and researching careers before I landed exactly where I wanted to be! I encourage students to explore new things and find a path that really excites you. It will make the college experience so much more enjoyable! I am so grateful to have found public health, which did just that for me.

Q: How will your education and experience as a public health student influence your path forward?

A: In addition to inspiring me to pursue the field of public health law and policy, the faculty at MEZCOPH has instilled certain values in me, like the importance of cultural competence and equity-centered practice, that will serve me well no matter where my career takes me.
