The certificate in public health is designed to be an interdisciplinary and professional program. This certificate provides opportunities for students to obtain broad knowledge and fundamental skills in the essential areas of public health. About the Program

The certificate is affiliated with the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and consists of the five core courses that are required of all MPH graduates. Upon completion of the certificate, students who are admitted to the MPH program may apply all fifteen credits to their degree.


Curriculum

The graduate Certificate in Public Health consists of 5 required course and a total of fifteen units.

Required Core Courses (15 units)

EPID 573A Basic Principles of Epidemiology
3 units//Fall & Spring

This is an introduction course on basic concepts, principles and methods of epidemiology and how these concepts and methods are applicable in epidemiologic and clinical and translational research. No prerequisite.

PHPM 574 Public Health Policy and Management
3 units//Spring

Management processes/roles of public health professionals; health service organization; policy issues and resource utilization/control; human resources management; public health trends.

EHS 575 Environmental and Occupational Health
3 units//Fall

Course emphasizes health hazard sources, methods to identify & evaluate them, and framework used to effect hazard control. Students will evaluate public health issues, understand research designs, identify and evaluate factors important to the development of monitoring programs.

BIOS 576A Biostatistics in Public Health
3 units//Fall & Spring

This course introduces biostatistical methods and applications, and will cover descriptive statistics, probability theory, and a wide variety of inferential statistical techniques that can be used to make practical conclusions about empirical data. Students will also be learning to use a statistical software package (STATA). Prerequisite: one year of college-level mathematics.

HPS 577 Sociocultural & Behavioral Aspects of Public Health
3 units

This course is an overview of significant social, cultural and behavioral issues related to public health. Major public health problems and the influences of sociocultural issues are analyzed in relation to health behavior. Readings, discussions, films, and class experiences/assignments focus on understanding the social and cultural issues that influence health‐related behavior among specific populations in the southwestern U.S., North America and internationally.

The program is designed to be completed in one to two years.
