Lois Loescher Ph.D.

Lois J. Loescher, Ph.D., RN is a tenured associate professor of nursing at the University of Arizona College of Nursing and holds a joint appointment in the MEZCOPH. She is a comprehensive member of the Arizona Cancer Center and a founding member of its Skin Cancer Institute (SCI). Her research concepts of interest are risk perception, risk communication and risk control behaviors pertaining to cancer and other disease states (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease). She has mentored students who have studies these concept in other cultures (e.g. Pacific Islanders, Japanese, Mexican Americans). Her funded research focuses primarily on theory and technology-based interventions to improve cancer risk-reducing behaviors in persons with strong risk factors for skin cancer, in particular, solid organ transplant recipients and persons with a history of melanoma. Dr. Loescher is also studying the use of technology-based interventions to improve primary care providers’ skills and self-efficacy for detecting abnormal skin lesions. She is currently developing a proposal to look at integrating skin cancer detection into stimulated clinical learning situations. Dr. Loescher has taught courses on theories of health promotion and risk reduction, translational research, genetics, research methods, and community health.
