Faculty, students, staff and alums of the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health enthusiastically welcomed the incoming class of 126 new graduate students last week during New Student Orientations. In addition to the customary orientation introductory exercises, lunch with faculty and review of policies and procedures, activities included a service learning project for MS/Doctoral students benefitting Ishkashitaa Refugee Network, yoga breaks and the always popular alumni panel. The day concluded with Welcome Back Mixer, well-attended by both current and new students.

Diversity is exhibited in various ways throughout the cohort. The college’s new class is comprised of 5 MS, 17 PhD, 8 DrPH, and 96 MPH students. They range in age from 21 to 53 and hail from 18 US states and 5 countries, including Mexico, Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana and China. Of the domestic students, 34% represent US underrepresented minorities. Languages spoken include Akan, Armenian, Bosnian, Chinese, Croatian, Ewe, Fanti, French, Ga, German, Hebrew, Italian, Kinyarwanda, Navajo, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Spanish, Swahili, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese. Within the ranks of this class are included 1 Gates Millennium Scholar, 1 McNair Scholar, 9 returned Peace Corps Volunteers, 4 former AmeriCorps Volunteers and 2 former Fulbright Scholars.

The College also welcomes 84 new online MPH students for fall 2016 courses.
