Public Health Researchers Participate in First AZ Heat Awareness Week

City with hot sun

Many of our public health faculty contributed to the Arizona Extreme Heat Preparedness Plan promoted by Governor Katie Hobbs as part of Arizona Heat Awareness Week, May 6-10, 2024, and our own Dr. Heidi Brown represented the University of Arizona at the kickoff press conference.

At the recent press conference for Arizona Heat Awareness Week (May 6-10, 2024) convened by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) and many city, state, and community partners, Dr. Heidi Brown represented the University of Arizona and spoke about the many collaborative research programs currently coordinated by the UArizona to prepare and protect communities from extreme heat.

An associate professor at the UArizona’s Zuckerman College of Public Health, Dr. Brown collaborates on many research projects designed to prepare for extreme heat and also participates in the Southwest Center on Resilience for Climate Change and Health (SCORCH), a Center in the college funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to build and support community resilience in the face of climate-driven health threats. Governor Hobbs specifically mentioned SCORCH in her Proclamation about Heat Awareness Week.

Many of our public health faculty, researchers, and students contributed to the Arizona Extreme Heat Preparedness Plan that was adopted by Governor Hobbs earlier this spring.
