Summer 2022 Graduate Profile: Mariah Albertie

Mariah Albertie -- MPH Graduate Finds Passion for Environmental Justice

While she took courses that sparked her interest in environmental justice on her way to earning her MPH degree, Mariah Albertie also worked full time as an academic advisor, helping to guide undergraduate public health students on their educational journey.

I have always been concerned with health disparity data but the most interesting thing I learned in the program had to do with environmental justice.

Mariah Albertie

MPH, Applied Epidemiology

As both staff and student in the College of Public Health, Mariah Albertie had to find ways to balance her full time job with her coursework in the Online MPH program. She succeeded, earned her MPH with a concentration in Applied Epidemiology, and graduated this summer 2022.

Mariah did her internship with the Arizona Youth Partnership and learned about perseverance there. Despite organizational changes during the year she worked with the Partnership, the program continued to deliver for youth and their families. That persistence and determination made a lasting impression.

As she progressed through the MPH program, Mariah was especially drawn to the concept of environmental justice.

“I have always been concerned with health disparity data but the most interesting thing I learned in the program had to do with environmental justice,” said Mariah, “disparities exist in an environmental context, and I ended up coming back to that idea in projects for multiple classes because it is so important, and the research is so interesting. I hope to work in environmental justice in the future.”

Chris Tisch, former Assistant Dean of Student Services, has known Mariah since she began working as an academic advisor in early 2020.

“Mariah joined MEZCOPH’s academic advising team during the COVID shutdown, so she had to learn her new job and coordinate with the rest of the student services team virtually, not an easy beginning but she figured it out,” said Tisch, “She quickly showed an interest in identifying, analyzing, and solving big picture issues. It is no wonder that she wanted to pursue an MPH degree, and her education has honed and strengthened her abilities as a critical and strategic thinker.”

Congratulations on your MPH degree Mariah! All of us in the college are excited to see where your perseverance and passion for environmental justice take you.
