Meccah Jarrah

MPH in Epidemiology, Tucson Campus

I chose public health because I want to not only make a difference in people's lives, but take what I learned/have learned and bring those skills with me on a global scale, to assist countries that potentially do not have the proper resources or tools to increase the quality of life of their residents.

    Prior Degree(s):

    BS in Biology - Biomedical Sciences

    Before entering the program:

    I completed my Bachelor of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Biomedical Sciences. I worked for the Center of Neurosciences as an Intern, Hospice Volunteer, as well as a Research Assistant for a Carpenter Bee study with Dr. Judith Bronstein.

    Why did you choose public health?

    I chose public health because I want to not only make a difference in people's lives, but take what I learned/have learned and bring those skills with me on a global scale, to assist countries that potentially do not have the proper resources or tools to increase the quality of life of their residents.

    Why did you choose MEZCOPH?

    I chose MEZCOPH because of how open the college is- it collaborates with many other colleges, including the College of Science, and I just always felt welcome even as an undergrad. The college also has incredible infectious disease epidemiology faculty, which really caught my attention, as it aligns with my interests. In addition, I am an Arizona native and it made the most sense for me to stay at a school I also adore.

    Public health interests:

    Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases (food-borne specifically), Surveillance, Emergency Response and Health Equities

    Interests/hobbies outside of school:

    Arcades, Hiking and Movies

    Tip for future students:

    Networking is key and taking advantage of opportunities will set you up for success! Don't be afraid to ask questions and reach out to faculty! Faculty love to see students shine- don't hesitate to reach out (be persistent but not annoying- they also are busy themselves). Understand that it will all work out at the end, if you put in the effort!
