Before entering the program:I worked for the US Department of Agriculture in a methods/development and biological control lab. I performed field studies and control methods to reduce the harmful environmental impact caused by invasive insects.
Why did you choose public health?I chose public health because it is a multidisciplinary field that draws from very disparate disciplines. I will have the ability to work in various fields to understand and solve health problems.
Why did you choose MEZCOPH?MEZCOPH’s ABET-accredited Industrial Hygiene program and diverse faculty educational backgrounds provide an opportunity to explore my interests and possible career paths. Being able to go for a hike or bike to class in January, when it is 70 degrees and sunny, isn’t such a bad thing, either.
Public health interests:Understanding environmental and workplace hazards, and the mechanisms of reducing and controlling health risks associated with their exposure.
Interests/hobbies outside of school:Mountain biking and hiking, traveling, Pure Michigan, and Michigan State basketball and football (I am warming up to UA athletics and am a fan unless they are playing MSU).
Tip for future students:Build relationships with the professors you connect with; they are a great resource and will do anything they can to help you. Student groups/organizations are a great way to meet new friends and stay active in the MEZCOPH community.
