The NIH supported Global Health Equity Scholars fellowship program funds students to conduct international research projects with mentor guidance, providing vital global research experience and a strong supportive network of program alumni for career opportunities. Applications due November 1, 2021.
The Global Health Equity Scholars (GHES) fellowship program from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) presents an outstanding opportunity for students in Public Health, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, or Dentistry, and pre or postdoctoral students (MD, PhD, DrPH, PharmD, etc.) to pursue international research projects in low or middle-income countries. The program provides funding, offers invaluable research experience, and connects fellows with a dedicated network of global research alumni.
The 12-month NIH program provides funding and mentorship that delivers exceptional interdisciplinary education and training in health research designed to improve health globally. The fellowship typically runs from July through June, with applications due in November.
Benefits for GHES Fellows
The GHES fellows receive a stipend at NIH scale, insurance, funded travel, and research funds. In addition, they receive a week-long orientation at NIH with the world’s leading global health experts. The research studies that fellows pursue provide the opportunity to publish in peer-reviewed journals, and to present at national and international conferences. They also become part of an active GHES fellows alumni network that provides ongoing mentoring and support.

About the GHES Fellows Program
The GHES Consortium is comprised of 4 US partner institutions that include the University of Arizona, the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, and Yale University. More than 100 GHES trained faculty members (mentors) of these institutions currently conduct research at one of 28 sites across 23 countries, representing Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, South and Southeast Asia, Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Oceania.
GHES Mission
The Global Health Equity Scholars (GHES) program is designed to create a new community of researchers, educators, and professionals prepared to address new and emerging global health challenges. We build on the last 6 years of this training program to create a cadre of new researchers who can dedicate their research career to address the health problems that arise from the difficult conditions prevalent in informal human settlements that the United Nations has defined as slums. Rather than addressing one disease at a time, we propose to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and integrated approach to deal with slum health issues. This approach will deliver multifaceted and interconnected solutions developed over many years by various participating faculty members of this program.
