- Aging – Everyone is Doing It! is a 7.5 week on-line course. The topics we will cover include:
- An overview of the field of gerontology
- Exploration of demographic trends in US society
- Foundation for the study of aging
- Key theories, concepts and issues grounded in the socio-cultural, biological, and political context of aging in the US
- Why should I take this course?
- Because everyone is aging! From the time we are born the count begins, and we will be old one day – if we are lucky!
- Learning about aging gives us tools to understand the experience of, and assist those who are old now, and help plan a better aging experience for those to come, including ourselves.
PHP 295 Aging, Environment and Wellbeing - Online / Live Online

- Aging, Environment and Wellbeing is a 7.5 week on
-line course. The topics we will cover include:- Exploration of the relationship between older people and their environment
- Factors such as how models of care, human services practices, public policy, societal attitudes, and environmental design positively or negatively impact the experience of diverse older persons
- Development of environmental design, social interventions, and public policy that can support wellbeing and optimize the lived experience of the aging and aged
- Why should I take this course?
- Because it’s fun, experiential, and multidisciplinary learning!
- You get to explore the complex nature of environment, the different things it encompasses, and how it can contribute to or restrict wellbeing and the quality of our lived experience generally, but especially later in life.
PHP 395 Community Health Education for Disease Outbreaks - Online
Adaeze Oguegbu, MSc, MS, MPH, PhD, CHES
This course is an overview of community health education and its role in improving the health of individuals and populations. This course highlights the importance of contact tracing to mitigate community disease transmission. Students will learn how to effectively communicate health education messages and positively influence the norms and behaviors of both individuals and communities. Practical guides in community health education will involve steps for implementing skills, tips
and techniques for successful implementation, strategies for overcoming challenges, and expected outcomes. Students will have fun learning to use social media tools, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, texting, blogging, smartphone apps, internet channels (e.g., YouTube), video vines in community health promotion.
PHP 495/595 Health Profession Finance - Online

- Health Profession Finance is a 2 unit online course.
- The curriculum includes webinars featuring financial professionals whose expertise covers debt management, retirement funds, estate planning, investments, startups and philanthropy.
- During the class, students will gain hands-on experience using the Health Trade Fund, a unique aspect of the course that allows students, working in teams, to dip into a pot of money to practice making investments.
- Why should I take this course?
- This class provides the skills you need to address and manage every financial contingency you will face at school and after you graduate.
- Everything from buying a car, to making investment decisions, to paying off student loans, to saving money for your children’s college education — decisions that most adults have to face at some point.
PHP 495/595 Medicaid: Policy, Politics, and Practicalities of Access to Healthcare - Online

PHP 517 Indigenous Public Health - Live Online
Stephanie Carroll, DrPH, MPH
- Indigenous Public Health will examine public health from Indigenous perspectives, including the conceptualization, practice, and application of environmental health, epidemiology, public health policy, biostatistics, and program development and evaluation in Indigenous communities. Through discussion and interaction among students, the instructor, and guest speakers via Zoom (video and phone), participants will explore special topics such as MMIWG, the impacts of COVID-19 in Indigenous communities, Indigenous data sovereignty and governance, and Indigenous research and ethics. Learning and growth from the course can be applied within public health or to scholarship, practice,
oractivism and. inother disciplines.
PHP 521 Administrative Dimensions of Indigenous Health - Online
John Molina, MD, JD, LHD
- This course will introduce state and federal processes that impact the delivery of health care to Indigenous (American Indian/Alaskan Native) populations and public health measures within the Indian Health Services (IHS) system. The course will further examine the legislative, organizational, and operational frameworks of the IHS that will provide comprehensive and meaningful knowledge for health and/or public health professional to implement informative policy measures to improve the health of Indigenous people through administrative frameworks.
PHP 527 Demographic Analysis - Online
Eduardo Gonzalez, PhD, MS
- This course will provide students the skills to apply Demographic Analysis techniques. Students will gain an understanding of main measures and techniques used in studying population dynamic and change. At the end of this course, students will be able to: a) identify and use the sources of data available for demographic research; b) analyze the population composition and change measures; c) apply measures of mortality, fertility, and migration levels and patterns; d) apply life table; e) identify the components of population projections.
